Equivalence of Electronic vs. Paper Administration of Patient Outcome Measures

In an extensive review and meta-analysis following up on Gwaltney et al’s 2008 research, this paper examined the comparability between electronic and traditional paper methods of administering patient reported outcome measures (PROMs). Drawing from data between 2007 and 2013, 72 out of 1,997 studies met our strict criteria. The findings reveal a generally good equivalence between the two methods, with most correlation coefficients showcasing this compatibility. Notably, more recent studies, randomized designs, and certain age demographics indicated higher agreement levels. Our study echoes Gwaltney’s conclusion, suggesting that electronic devices, when migrated using best practices, can be effectively used for PROMs without compromising the integrity of the data. As technology continues to play a pivotal role in clinical studies, this research offers crucial insights for investigators, regulators, and sponsors. While further standardization and research are required, our findings indicate a promising trajectory towards simplifying and modernizing patient reporting procedures.
